A study was made into the electric conductivity of zirconia ceramics with oxygen non-stoichiometry resulted from the introduction of an activating impurity, vacuum annealing or ion irradiation. It is concluded that oxygen content variations due to high temperature annealing and introducing Y2O3 disperse powder are of little significance for the electric conductivity. Ion implantation results in simultaneous violation of oxygen stoichiometry and specific radiation defect formation. The system of generated localized states is responsible for the transition of dielectric surface layer into the conductive state.
