The hard alloys consisting of steel matrix and tungsten carbides were studied for their macro- and microstructure after dynamic loading. It was revealed that stable state of a binding phase promoted sample fracture under impact shock, but metastable state of matrix made it possible to preserve material continuity. The microstructure of deformed samples were given along with diagrams for distribution of carbide particle sizes and distances between microcracks. Based on distribution diagrams an attempt was made to analyze theoretically the microstructure of alloys. Application of metastable matrices in composite materials was shown to result in considerable decrease of plastic strain level and fracture not only under quasi-static loading but under high speed dynamic loading as well.
