The mechanism of high-temperature destruction of typical thermoplastic polymer materials such as polyvinyl chloride and polytetrafluoroethylene under intense thermal and gasdynamic attack of gas flows at a pressure of up to 15 MPa is experimentally studied. It is determined that, when the gas flows move in parallel with the heated surface of the material, the ablation of the thermoplastics occurs both due to the thermochemical processes and as a result of the thermomechanical destruction of thin surface layers of the polymer in the melted or softened state. The physical model of the destruction of thermoplastic materials during their interaction with the gas flows is formulated.
