A study was conducted to demonstrate the synthesis of motor fuels from bioethanol. The conversion mechanism included the dehydration of ethanol with isomerization and ring closure in the hydrocarbon fragments or hydrogenation. It was observed during the study that the conversion of ethanol can be affected by process parameters like temperature, pressure, and raw material feed rate. It was also found that the conversion of ethanol on catalysts based on high-silica ZSM-5 zeolites with silicate modulus Si:Al > 100 produced gas with ethylene and olefins. Conversion of ethanol on oxygen zeolites with Si:Al < 80 produced a liquid product as a mixture of aromatic, saturated, and olefinic hydrocarbons. Catalytic conversion of ethanol by biomass fermentation can be used as an alternative for oil refining and to reduce the carbon dioxide emission.
