Аннотация

Any solid under loading is a self consistent multiscale system where surface layers and inner interfaces are very important functional subsystems. A chessboard-like distribution of tensile and compressive normal stresses take place within the interface "surface layer (coating) - substrate" in a loaded solid. Its existence is illustrated by initiation of multiple cracking of thin coatings along conjugate directions of τmax. It is shown that such multiple cracking do not decrease but can increase all mechanical characteristics of a loaded solid.
