Silver solid amalgam composite electrode (AgSA-CE), prepared from silver amalgam powder and epoxy resin, proved experimentally to be a suitable, reliable and environmentally friendly substitute for the hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) in electrochemical analyses. This electrode represents combination of solid composite electrode and solid amalgam electrode. It does not contain any liquid mercury and simultaneously it exhibits the electrochemical properties similar to those of mercury electrodes. Its potential window is similar to that of mercury electrode; however, its surface is solid. MeSA-CE (where Me represents the amalgam forming metal) can be used in polished form, modified by mercury film or by mercury meniscus. AgSA-CE has wide analytical applications in determination of cadmium, lead, copper, thallium, ascorbic acid, p-nitrophenol, iodates, adenine, cathodic as well as anodic determinations, with or without accumulation step). The achieved detection limits are sufficient for most practical applications. Preparation of those electrodes is simple and easy. Electrochemical regeneration of the electrode surface ensures reasonable repeatability and long term stability.
