The manner is investigated in which the fractal dimension changes with the distance from the fracture in fractured aluminum and silicon iron polycrystalline specimens. It is shown that, on approaching the fracture, the fractal dimension changes in three stages under active loading in tension and in two stages under cyclic bending. The fractal dimension of the surface can serve as a good quantitative characteristic of the ability of a strained material to fracture.
