Participation of inducible stress proteins in the cardioprotective effect of Rhodiolae rosea

Effects of the Rhodiolae rosea extract on the contractility of rat hearts isolated by the method of Langendorff, the activity of creatine phosphokinase in the perfusate, and the induction of synthesis of stress proteins in the myocardium were studied after total ischemia and reperfusion. This adaptogen produced a cardioprotective effect and prevented a disturbance of contractility due to ischemia and reperfusion. The possible participation of the inducible stress proteins (hsp-70) in these effects is discussed.
