    A study is made of dynamic standby of a group of elements of the same kind when there is renewal. An examination is made of exponential distribution and of the case in which all the elements have the same arbitrary distribution of the duration of failure-free operation. In both cases, recursion relations are obtained for the mean gain. These enable one to find the optimal dynamic strategy for inclusion of the stand-by elements (inclusion in a lightly loaded regime in the case of exponential distributions and in a loaded regime in the general case). The question of unreliable reswitching devices is examined fr exponential distributions.
