Certain methods for triggering sparks at voltages of 10**6 V and above have been studied experimentally. The working medium in the switches is nitrogen or a mixture of nitrogen with SF//6. A discharge delay time of t//d equals 15 plus or minus 0. 8 nsec is obtained at 1. 9 MV by triggering sparks with a nanosecond beam of fast electrons. Trigratron ignition of a megavolt switch yields t//d equals 5. 1 plus or minus 0. 5 nsec. A method involving the parallel ignition of two trigatrons has also been studied. It is found that the switching time, or the current rise time, t//r, with two sparks is shorter than that for a single spark channel by a factor of almost 2.
