The character and mechanism of the formation of dynamic mesostructure, the statistics of the crack-size distribution, and the relation between cracks and fatigue characteristics of lead and its alloys were investigated upon alternating bending. It was shown that the key role in their fatigue fracture belongs to the size and shape of elements of the dynamic mesostructure and the kinetics of its formation, which depends on the degree of uniformity of deformation. The determining factor responsible for increasing lifetime of polycrystals is the suppression of deformation localization and, hence, the suppression of the formation of stress mesoconcentrators, which prevents the development of a "dangerous" block mesostructure and the growth of fatigue cracks with sizes larger than a critical size.
