Аннотация

The ITEL (Interfacial Turbulence in Evaporating Liquid) experiment will fly on board a Sounding Rocket (MASER 9) in November 2001. This project is supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the module design is achieved by the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) and Lambda-X. The experiment is also a preliminary step in the preparation of the CIMEX (Convection and Interfacial Mass Exchange) research program, which will make use of the International Space Station. During the 6 minutes of microgravity of the ITEL experiment, a highly volatile liquid layer (ethyl alcohol) will be evaporated, and the convection phenomena generated by the evaporation process (Marangoni-Bénard flows triggered by the latent heat consumption at free surface level) will be visualized. Two optical diagnostics have been developed around the experiment cell. An interferometric optical tomograph measures the 3-dimensional distribution of temperature in the evaporating liquid and a Schlieren system visualizes the temperature gradients inside the liquid together with the liquid surface deformation. In addition, absolute temperatures are measured at different positions in the experiment cell (liquid, gas, metallic bloc). This contribution presents the experiment principle, the overall module and some of the preliminary results obtained with the protoflight hardware, including reconstructions of 3-dimensional temperature distributions.
