To improve the wear resistance of high-chromium cast iron ISTs (3.0% C, 20.1% Cr, 1.0% Si, 0.75% Mn), it was inoculated with Al2O3 ultra-dispersed powder. The wear resistance of castings exposed to abrasive wear is examined. Evidence shows that the hardness HRC is higher by 86.6% (62.5 units) for as-cast iron inoculated with the Al2O3 ultra-dispersed powder as opposed to that for noninoculated cast iron. Microstructure show the formation of round carbides uniformly distributed throughout matrixes and mutually isolated by areas of hardening phases. This leads to the HRC stabilization.
