Influence of technological parameters on size homogeneity of packet martensite

The review was made on effects of austenization temperature, cooling rate and steel chemical composition on size and shape of packet martensite crystals in low- and medium-carbon steels. Analysis of available data did not allow one to give exhaustive answer to this problem, hence experimental investigations were conducted on specimens of steel type 38KhN3MFA. Methods of electron microscopy were applied to study martensite microstructure after quenching from 850 and 940° C. Austenization duration constituted 2.5 h. It was concluded that spatial configuration of martensite packets depended on initial size of austenite grains and its dependence was enhanced with austenization temperature increase.
