Аннотация
Nanosecond discharges in air are investigated at pressures in the range 10-100 torr with a current density of (1-5). 10**3 A/cm**2. The results show that a high-conductivity spark channel is initiated by a cathode spot a certain time after the initiation of the discharge. The duration of discharges without spots is measured. A mechanism for the appearance of a spot based on an instability of the cathode sheath caused by field emission from microscopic protuberances is discussed.
