Light scattering was used to study the initial stages of evolution of fracture in solid polymers (polymethylmethacrylate and polystyrene) under the action of an electric field. Analysis of the behavior of scattering during the action of the field showed the way in which submicrocracks form, and their average size at various stages of fracture is estimated. It is shown that the accumulation of space charge and the formation of submicrocracks are interrelated. The results are in good agreement with the basic ideas of the thermal theory of solid fracture, taking into account the features arising from the presence of a strong electric field.
