Effect of the process voltage and electrolyte composition on the structure and properties of Sr-incorporated micro-arc calcium phosphate coatings formed on Mg-0.8Ca

Sr-incorporated calcium phosphate coatings were deposited on Mg-0.8 wt. % Ca alloy by the micro-arc oxidation method under the process voltages of 350-500 V, with using of Sr-substituted tricalcium phosphate (Sr-TCP) and Sr-substituted hydroxyapatite (Sr-HA). The current density for MAO process of Sr-HA coatings deposition was higher than that for the process of Sr-TCP coatings deposition. The coating morphology, microstructure and compositions have been studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The phase composition of Sr-HA coatings included α-TCP, β-TCP, Mg3(PO4)2 and MgO. In addition, HA was contained in the composition of Sr-TCP. It was revealed that Sr is uniformly distributed within the coating layer. The highest concentration of Sr was 2.0 at. % in Sr-HA coatings deposited at 500 V.
