The effect of absorbing impurities in compacted explosive powders was simulated by the Monte Carlo method. The simulation tracked the paths of 103-104 photons as they were scattered by the diffuse material and impurities. The introduction of absorbing impurities is equivalent to a decrease in the value of the photon survival rate, which in turn directly influences the reflection coefficient of the diffusely scattering media. An experimental study was also conducted of the effect of the addition of carbon black on the sensitivity of PETN explosive.
