A design study has been performed on a high-current switch operating at 2. 4 Mv for the Angara-5 apparatus. Subject to given constraints on the size, a study has been made of the effects on the electrical strength from the distribution of the electrostatic field, the gas pressure and composition, the material in the insulating chamber, and the sectioning of the electrode system and switching chamber. Operating times have been measured with control by field distortion for several control-electrode configurations. Two types of switch with working voltages up to 2. 4 Mv have been manufactured with nanosecond operating stability, which provide reliable operation under the required conditions.
