Аннотация

The optically transparent ceramics have been sintered after compacting of dry Nd3+Y2O3 nanopowder under the powerful ultrasonic action (PUA). It was shown that PUA allows improving the optical properties of ceramics. The light attenuation is related to the scattering centres observed in the samples compacted by conventional uniaxial pressing and by ultrasonic compaction: pores and inclusions with a content of about 10-2 and 10-3vol.%, respectively, as well as the compaction defects that play a predominant role in the process. PUA results in a more uniform distribution of small pores in the samples that significantly affects the enhancement of Nd3+Y2O3 ceramics transparency from 20% up to 50% at the wavelength of 1.06 microns.
