Аннотация

Investigation of acoustic backscattering at 50 and 200 kHz and of temperature in the upper layer of bottom sediment in the Arctic shelf is reported. Abnormally deep (>10 ms from bottom surface for 50 kHz and >5 ms for 200 kHz) backscattering was registered on shelf regions with negative bottom sediment temperature; the phenomenon is attributed to permafrost. It is demonstrated that high-frequency acoustic backscattering method allows remote detection of the regions with negative and positive bottom temperature that is useful for permafrost dynamics investigation in the Arctic shelf and for studying gas-hydrate stability zone.
