The study presented in present paper was determined by the imperative demand to improve the performance and to extend the service life of various tools and engineering components in wear, abrasion and/or corrosion situations. The aim of this work was to obtain a nitrogen-alloyed stainless steel hard coatings using the cathodic arc method. Various investigation techniques were used to determine film properties and their dependence on the main deposition parameters. The depth profiles of the coatings was evaluated by GDOES investigations. Depending on the deposition parameters, the nitrogen content within the coating raised up to 14 at.%. The conditions to obtain compact coatings with 2 to 3 times higher hardness than that of the substrate material were determined.
