Visualization of localized deformation in friction

Abstract

In-situ examination of deformation zones in friction has been carried out using a method of computing decorrelation. Two types of deformation zones, namely, moving and fixed, have been revealed. The fixed zones correspond to deformation localization in surface layers of specimens. With atomic force acoustic and scanning electron microscopy we study the structure of the material in the localization zone.
