Abstract

When heated in benzene with paraformaldehyde and boric acid, 1,1′-methylenebis(2-naphthol) easily decomposes to 1,2-naphthoquinone 1-methide, which dimerizes into a spirodimer. The by-product of the reaction is 14H-dibenzo[a,j]xantriene.
