Abstract
The two-loop counterterms for the two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model on a general scalar manifold with torsion are calculated using the background field method. The supersymmetric extension of the nonlenear sigma model with torsion in two space-time dimensions is investigated also, showing how the purely bosonic results carry over completely in superspace. The underlying background field method is presented in detail both in components and in superfields.
