Two-dimensional model of intermetallic synthesis accounting melting

Abstract

The paper suggests a two-dimensional model of high-temperature synthesis of an intermetallic in the regime of dynamic thermal explosion after heating the powder compact in a steel cylindrical reactor. The model takes into account melting and three series-parallel reactions. Kinetic laws take into consideration severe inhibition of the reaction by the layer of the synthesized product. The paper presents examples of a numerical study of the synthesis. It is shown that within the investigated domain of the model parameters, a composite containing mostly Ni3Al intermetallic and unreacted nickel and NiAl is formed. The final result considerably depends on the heating conditions.
