The structure and mechanical properties of VT23 laser-welded joints

Abstract

The structure and mechanical properties of welded joints the of VT23 titanium alloy produced by laser welding with subsequent thermomechanical treatment (TMP1 and TMP2) including ultrasonic mechanical forging are investigated. The results have shown that the fatigue life of welded joints in TMP2 multiply increases compared with the fatigue life of the welded connection samples in the delivery. The structure of a welded joint formed by laser welding has a gradient highly non-equilibrium coarse-grained structure based on the α-phase. The structure with defect density monotonically decreases with the increasing distance from the surface into the material. As follows from the presented data, the fatigue life of the VT23 titanium alloy has increased more than threefold.
