Abstract
The two-dimensional problem of heat conduction in a cylindrical sample of material is solved numerically when a short heat pulse acts on its surface and the heated region is in the form of a circle. It is shown that the use of a laser beam with a transverse cross section of rectangular form gives a considerably smaller error in determining the thermal characteristics.
