The 9-vinyl- and 9-propenylcarbazole reactivities in cationic polymerizations

Abstract

The reactivities of the 9-vinyl-(VC) and trans-9-propenylcarbazoles (PC) have been studied during their copolymerizations with butyl vinylate over the SnCl4-trichloroacetic acid catalyst complex in methylene chloride at 0°C. The copolymerization constants which were determined according to the Kelen-Tüdös reaction show a rapid reactivity decrease when changing from VC to PC (rVC=1855±0·71, rBV=3·02±0·1, rPC=0·32±0·02, rBV=20·39±0·62).
