Rare-earth elements and scandium in the coals of the Aralichevo District in the Kuznetsk Basin

Abstract

Study of the coals from the Aralichevo District in the Kuznetsk Basin have shown that the Usyatsky Formation contain the coals enriched by rare-earth elements and scandium. Their maximum concentrations are typical of the ash-richest beds of the formation. It is shown that the distribution of elements within the beds is nonuniform. High-P sites of a bed are most enriched in REE, while its marginal portions are Sc-enriched. The main carrier of Sc and REE in their abnormally enriched coals is organic matter. It is supposed that REE's are accumulated in phosphates, while Sc is retained by chemosorption on humic matter.
