Abstract

In order to investigate the acceleration of bunches of multiply charged ions in a high-current electron beam, a spectrometer has been designed for multiply charged ions in which the ion energy is determined according to the time of flight over a base 30-cm long, while the charge state is determined from the magnitude of the range in a stack of absorptive coils. The time resolution of the spectrometer for operation with a 6LOR-2M oscilloscope is 3 nsec while the energy resolution is 30% at the 20-MeV level (scaled for hydrogen ions).
