Abstract
Diphilic β-cyclodextrins (β-CD) containing one (CD-1), three (CD-3), and five (CD-5) C15H31 alkyl chains grafted to the primary hydroxy groups of the β-CD molecule were synthesized. The behavior of monolayers of these compounds at the water-air interface was studied. The shape of the π-A isotherm and the parameters of the monolayer (the limiting surface area per a molecule and the pressure of collapse) were demonstrated to depend on the number of alkyl chains grafted to the β-CD molecule. The isotherm of compression of the CD-3 monolayer shows a plateau. The Langmuir-Blodgett multilayer films were deposited on monocrystalline silicon wafers. The refractive index and the thickness per monolayer were found to be dependent on the number of alkyl chains grafted to the β-CD molecule and on the deposition pressure of the film.
