Abstract
The plasma density is determined in a vacuum arc with a current of 300 A in a pulse 75 ns long for the stage in which the arc exists and for the stage of expansion into vacuum. The plasma density in the arc falls from 10**1**7 to 5 multiplied by (times) 10**1**5 cm** minus **3 in 300 ns. After the current pulse, the plasma detaches from the electrodes and continues to expand into vacuum at 2 multiplied by (times) 10**6 cm/s. A mechanism for the formation of this plasma is proposed.
