Precursor phenomenon in wire arrays: Model and experiment

Abstract

The problem and development of a precursor phenomenon in wire arrays was discussed. It was found that the precursor appearance in an imploding z pinch was possible if the plasma skin layer was absent and the conductivity of the inner layers of the plasma shell rises more rapidly than the conductivity of the outer layers. Analytical formulae on the dependencies of the precursor current on the wire-array rise time and the wire array parameters were also presented. The process of precursor formation resulted in longer implosion times.
