Physico-chemical state of surface layers and service properties of VT18U titanium alloy irradiated with a high power ion beam

Abstract

Investigations were carried out into the chemical composition and structural - phase state of surface layers of VT18U alloy after the effect of a powerful ion-beam with a current density of 20-160 A/cm2 and diffusion annealing, as well as after service tests. The results show that ion-beam treatment makes it possible to increase the endurance limit by 10%, the cyclic endurance at 400°C and a load of 370 MPa by up to 20 times, heat resistance at 550°C up to 2.3 times, and dust erosion resistance 1.8 times.
