Abstract

This chapter gives a conceptual overview of optimization techniques, describing their main characteristics. The goal of this introduction is to motivate the consideration of evolutionary methods for solving optimization problems. The study of the optimization methods is conducted in such a way that it is clear the necessity of using evolutionary optimization methods for the solution of image processing and pattern recognition problems.
