Abstract

The concept of optimization is present in most areas of science and engineering. On an unconscious level, human nature encourages us to look for better ways to solve problems or to save resources to minimize loses and maximize profits. In this chapter, the concept of optimization is formally presented. After the introduction of the general description of optimization problems, multiple properties of the methodology are discussed to later focus on classical approaches for optimization, paying special attention to gradient-based methods.
