    Abstract

    An examination is made of a system consisting of one basic element and n minus 1 standby elements. A strategy of putting standby elements into operation that takes into account both the instants at which the switch is made and indications of the number of elements involved in it is discussed. A strategy is defined that maximizes the mean time of failure-free operation of the system in the case of an infinite functioning period.
