Abstract

The paper analyzes theoretically multiple cracking of hardened surface layers in tension of surface-hardened, flat 65CM3 and 12Cr1MoV steel specimens. The effect of propagation of a zigzag localized shear band in the tensile specimen bulk on surface cracking is considered. The energy of localized shear macroband formation and propagation in the specimen bulk is estimated.
