Luminescence of Baikal water as an instrument for studying lake dynamics

Abstract

Some effects of luminescence of the Baikal water are described. It is proposed to use this for studying hydrodynamic processes in the lake. From data on the depth course of the intensity of luminescence, the conclusion is drawn that the intensity of the vertical water exchange in Lake Baikal is high, including that outside the periods of homothermy. Of particular interest are rapid variations in the intensity of the luminescence, which attest to a nonstationary nature of deep waters.
