The block diagram of a lightning counter is presented. It receives electromagnetic and sound signals originating in the environment during storm discharges. This instrument records, practically speaking, all storm discharges within the radius of 10 km while lightnings occurring beyond the limits of this radius are not recorded. The lightning counter has passed field tests and is found to be suitable for recording storm activity instead of the visual method. The data obtained by the instrument are more objective and provide quantitative characteristics.
