Light concentrators for the optical module of a Cerenkov detector of wide atmospheric avalanches

Abstract

The paper has presented calculations of light concentrators of the conic and the Winston lens types. Also, efficiency of light collection, functions of angular sensitivity and geometrical factor of the signal/noise ratio for a photodetector with a semispherical photocathode have been given. It has been shown that the use of a photodetector of the hybride ″Kvasar-370″ type gives the opportunity to create optical modules to monitor Cerenkov radiation, with the diameter of a semispherical cathode equal to 370 mm and with a light concentrator of the Winston lense type. The characteristics of optical modules are: efficient area - 0.5 m2, angle of sight - ±32°, nonuniformity of angular sensitivity - 30% and full degree of light concentration equals 1000.
