Investigation of the hard films deposited by PVD-magnetron sputtering on the cutting tools

Abstract

Hard coatings based on hard materials are especially suitable for the purposes of protection against metallurgical tools wear. The properties involving high hardness and thermal stability with low wear resistance and friction coefficient are the main goal to achieve. Hard materials such as WC are widely used as cutting tools material due to their high hardness, strength and fracture toughness. Elemental composition and topography, of the coatings, it was determined by the SEM method. Phase composition and texture has studied by X-ray diffraction technique. The mechanical property of coatings has investigated by microhardness measurement and scratch test. The results of experimental research proved that the investigated coatings exhibited a high microhardness having good adhesion on the substrate (> 50 N).
