Abstract
The initiation and development of discharges in purified water and hexane were studied for pulse rise times of Τr ≈ 2-3 nsec and pulse lengths of Τp≈10-50 nsec by an oscilloscopic method and with an electron-optical image converter. The results are compared with data on the nanosecond breakdown of gases. A physical interpretation is offered for the observed behavior.
