IMPURITY STATES OF POSITRONS IN IONIC CRYSTAL PHOSPHORS.

Abstract

The time and angular dependences of the annihilation decay of positrons were determined for KCl and KCl-4% AgCl crystals and the annihilation characteristics were calculated using the quasifree positron model. A comparison of the calculated and experimental data made it possible to identify the impurity states of positron (quasifree) and positronium types. An analysis was made of the formation, properties, and annihilation parameters of these states. The positrons in such states annihilated with the outer-shell electrons of impurity ions and had annihilation characteristics different from those of ″defect-free″ crystals. This should make it possible to use the positron annihilation method for studying the electron states of activator ions in solids.
