Abstract
A method is proposed for improving the time resolution of the FEU-49 photomultiplier by shielding its envelope by a conducting layer at ground potential. This reduces the photomultiplier pulse duration by 25 to 30% and increases its amplitude by 15 to 20%. Applying this method to a total absorption Cherenkov spectrometer improves its time resolution by 1 nsec on the average without impairing its energy resolution.
