Abstract
The authors examined the effect of pulsed laser radiation with λ= 1.06 μm on specimens of MgO single crystal. The results show that laser melting of the surface of the crystals leads to the formation of inherent lattice defects which should be regarded as the result of formation of F-colour centres in the volume of the oxide specimen.
