Features of behaviour of structural, mechanical and friction properties of tool steels treated by powerful ion beams

Abstract

Effect of powerful ion beams on structural, mechanical and friction properties of the tool steels was studied. Microhardness and friction coefficient depended on structural variations in surface, layers of the steels after irradiation. Formation of surface austenite produced essential decrease in friction coefficient of the steels. Obtained results were explained by molecular-deformation model of friction. So, mechanical and friction properties of the tool steels may be changed choosing conditions of powerful ion beams and solving the problem of space-time distribution of the temperatures.
