Abstract
The methods available for limiting switching overvoltages appearing in conjunction with extra-fast interruption of inductive circuits by explosive breakers are analyzed and their drawbacks determined. It is proposed that highly nonlinear zinc oxide varistors be used to limit overvoltages and to dissipate the breaking energy. Methods are presented for choosing the number and type of varistors and calculating the interrupt time for given current-limitation and overvoltage levels.
