Abstract
The development of a volume discharge excited by a beam of fast electrons is studied at pressures P greater than equivalent to 1 atm. The current characteristics are calculated allowing for the parameters of the discharge circuit and the energy input to the gas is analyzed. It is shown that maintenance of the discharge by ionization processes permits a substantial reduction in the beam current while maintaining acceptable energy characteristics and sparkless operation.
